ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — With her 87th minute goal, Ashley vonTillow lifted the Sonoma State Seawolves to a 1-0 victory over the Southern Oregon Raiders, their fifth of the season. vonTillow's goal—her first in a Seawolves uniform—continues a series of late game-winners for Sonoma State, as each of their last three matches have been decided after the 86-minute mark.
"I think it just comes down to who wants it more, and who has the energy and passion," vonTillow noted of her team's resiliency. "[It] proves that we have the fight, and want it."
Sonoma State dominated the first half, taking advantage of five fouls committed by the Raiders, shooting five times more frequently, but the Seawolves were unable to put one away before the break.
vonTillow got her chance late in the second half as Holle Depina headed a shot on goal, forcing a glove save from Southern Oregon's keeper, Hannah Ceciliani. After the save, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and back into the box where it fell at the feet of vonTillow. The freshman forward merely tapped it on target before Ceciliani could recover, notching the game-winner for Sonoma State.
The Seawolves' defense kept Southern Oregon away from goal, as keeper Kristen Spear only had to make one save en route to her third shutout of the season.
With the victory, the Seawolves improve to a perfect 5-0-0 as they open CCAA play on Friday. Sonoma State will travel to Seaside as they take on Cal State Monterey Bay September 15th at 3pm PT.
Quotes from Head Coach Emiria Salzmann Dunn:
- "I'm happy we were able to pull out three wins in five days. No matter how you look at it, it's hard to do. We learned a lot about our team and are excited to keep growing and improving each day and each game. Dayna Dolcini played every minute of every game and was spectacular, I'm so proud of the performances she has been able to give."
