SEASIDE, Calif. — After remaining scoreless through regulation, Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay's match was decided by a single goal as the Monterey Bay Otters defeated the Seawolves 1-0 in overtime. The loss snaps a string of five straight wins by #10 Sonoma State to start the season and marks their first loss of the season, in the CCAA conference opener.
The game-winner was scored in the 98th minute when Sahana Bojorquez took a shot which Seawolves' keeper Kristen Spear batted out with a glove save. The ball, however, fell back into the box where Haley Nishimoto gathered the rebound and fired it to the left side of the net.
The Seawolves put pressure on the Otters throughout the match—as Bella Amyx accounted for four of her team's nine shots on goal—however, the Otters' Victoria Whyte made three saves for Monterey Bay en route to her shutout.
Sonoma State will regroup and seek a return to their winning ways as they visit Cal State East Bay, Sunday in Hayward. Kickoff is slated for 11:30am PT.
