ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - With a strong 3-1 win against Fresno Pacific Tuesday night, Sonoma State improved to 2-2-1 ahead of their conference opener at Cal State Monterey Bay. The Seawolves scored three times in the first half, dominating through 45, and rode out the remainder of the game to hold on for the win.
SSU notched their first goal in the early minutes of the match, when Luis Mendoza chipped a shot around a defender from 20 yards out. The ball was out of reach of the diving keeper, Patrick Timmer, and put Sonoma State up 1-0.
At the 38-minute mark, the Seawolves added two more to their tally within a matter of 12 seconds. The first of the two was scored by Kyle Owings. Owings dribbled around a defender at the far side of the box before taking a left-footed shot to the near post for his second of the season. Seconds later, Sebastian Santos netted his second as well, as he booted one in from 10 yards out.
Sonoma entered the break up 3-0 but Fresno Pacific put the pressure on in the second half. The Sunbirds scored in the 56th minute when Jose Segura capitalized on a deflection and buried one. Despite opening up multiple opportunities in the remaining minutes of the game, Fresno Pacific was denied another goal.
With the win, the Seawolves will move on to face Cal State Monterey Bay to open CCAA play. They play in Seaside Friday, at 3:00pm PT.
