SEASIDE, Calif. — In a chippy match that resulted in seven yellow cards and two ejections, Sonoma State defeated the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 2-0 notching a victory in their first conference match of the season.
Kyle Owings opened up the scoring in the 26th minute when his third goal of the season put SSU up 1-0. Evan Roehrig laid off a pass from 25 yards out, where Owings took possession and drove toward the box. His left-footed strike went far-post and beat keeper Jesus Ochoa for the early lead.
The Seawolves took the lead into the break and soon after found themselves playing a man up against Monterey Bay, when Darren Sinclaid was awarded two cards within the 49th minute.
Sonoma State doubled their lead in the 69th minute as Eric Alvarado converted a penalty kick on the 10-man Otters, his second goal of the season.
Eight minutes later, the squads sat even at 10 men a side as Tanner Allison was shown a red card for violent conduct.
Despite going 10 v 10 in the final 12 minutes, the Otters were unable to break through against the Seawolves, as Sonoma State took their 2017 CCAA opener by a final of 2-0.
SSU will travel to Hayward on Sunday, where they will take on Cal State East Bay at 2pm PT.
