Seawolves Outlast #16 Coyotes In Four-Set Thriller

ROHNERT PARK -- Four Sonoma State volleyball players recorded double-digit kills and Courtney Seda handed out a career-high 62 assists, adding 12 digs en route to a thrilling 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 31-29) over 16th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves improve to 8-3 overall and remain perfect in CCAA play at 2-0.  The Coyotes fell to 5-5 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

With the win over Cal State San Bernardino, Sonoma State has now won six of its last 10 meetings between the two programs since the Seawolves snapped a 33-match losing streak to the Coyotes back in 2013.

In game one the Seawolves came out sizzling hot jumping out to a 10-3 lead behind the very tough serving of sophomore Libero Megan Bohorquez who served five straight points and Defensive specialist Ashleigh Phelps who served four more including an ace. The spread in points worked its way up to 18-10 behind the ever effective hitting of senior middle Kelsey McIntire who racked up six kills on nine attempts. While the Coyotes closed the gap late it was the Seawolves who closed it out with a three point victory.

In set number two it was the Coyotes who jumped out early 6-3 , but Sonoma State quickly closed the gap. Once again it was McIntire back in the spot light as she served seven straight serves and forcing the Coyotes constantly out of system The table had been turned with the Seawolves jumping out to a 13-9 lead and they never looked back closing the set out with a six point victory.

Set number three and a 2-0 lead is always a challenge to put away a nationally ranked opponent. Cal State San Bernardino did just that as they started to flex their muscle. In the set it was outside hitter Lauren Nicholson (22 kills/52 attempts) and middle hitter Hailey Jackson (16 kills/27 attempts) who put their team on their backs tallying six and five kills individually with only one hitting error. The Coyotes consistently held the lead but the Seawolves never laid down scoring five of seven points late bringing the score to 21-22. That was as close as the Seawolves got and San Bernardino finished the set scoring three points in a row.

The fourth set was an epic matchup which had 23 tie scores and 11 lead changes and all the excitement and drama you would want in a set. In this set it was once again McIntire who had six kills, zero errors on ten attempts, and sophomore outside hitter Caiti Wiesner scoring eight times on 22 swings. At 17-17 is where the real fun began as nobody had a lead bigger than one point. Near the end of the set the Seawolves had match point five times while the Coyotes held a set point advantage twice. At 29-29 it was a kill by McIntire, and finally a big swing by Wiesner to send the fans home happy and a big 31-29 win.

After the match, Seda, who dropped the aforementioned 62 assists on the Coyotes, commented "Today was a big win for us. Everyone put in 110 percent and that is how we were successful. The passers did an amazing job with getting the ball to me and giving us a great opportunity to score."

Head Coach Bear Grassl was equally as proud of his team commenting "We played better for longer in high stress situations than we had all year. In the fourth game we buckled down and took chances that we needed to be successful."

The Seawolves now take to the road as they head to San Francisco to take on the Gators of San Francisco State on Wednesday September 20th, and then on Friday September 22nd, a match up at Humboldt State University.
