ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The Sonoma State Seawolves notched their fourth victory in a row on Thursday night—in a non-conference match against Holy Names University—by a final of 2-1.
The game was scoreless through the first 44 minutes and appeared to be heading to a 0-0 halftime, but a minute before the break, Sebastian Santos put his team ahead. Santos caught a breakaway and sped toward goal. With a defender putting pressure on him and the keeper off his line, Santos directed his shot toward the far post and beat both players for the first goal of the game and his third of the season.
The score remained 1-0 until the 73rd minute when a Seawolves player was brought down inside the box prompting the referee to point to the spot. Eric Alvarado took the penalty kick, and pushed his shot to the bottom-right corner, where it rolled in for SSU's second goal of the game.
It appeared as if the Seawolves would hold on to the 2-0 lead for their third consecutive shutout, but in the final seconds of the match, Hernan Mercado picked up a goal from seven yards out.
With the win Sonoma State improves to 5-2-1 and will look to earn their fifth-straight win when they travel to face Humboldt State this Sunday. The Seawolves and the Jacks kickoff at 1pm PT.
