Layman Nets Win For Seawolves With 89th Minute Goal

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — An incredibly evenly matched game between the Sonoma State and the Dixie State Trailblazers seemed destined for overtime action, but thanks to an 89th minute goal off the boot of Sam Layman, the Seawolves claimed a regulation-time win in their first home match of the season.

The Seawolves offered a chance in the early minutes of the game when Riley West sent a pass through the box and to the foot of Layman. Layman flicked it on far-post with a nifty backheel but the soft ball was corralled by the Trailblazers' Felicity Tarr.

Sonoma continued to take shots on goal throughout the half, forcing four saves out of Tarr, but to no avail.

Later in the second half, Madison Watts sent a cross into Alexis Espitia where the freshman's redirect beat the keeper but rolled just wide of the upright.

With a minute and ten seconds left on the clock in regulation, Sonoma pushed their way into the box, taking multiple shots that hit defenders before Bella Amyx broke free and put a shot on goal. The shot was glove saved by Tarr but rolled away from her as Layman put a foot on the ball and sunk it into the back of the net.

The game winner netted the Seawolves their third win—and Kristen Spear's second clean sheet—of the season.

Sonoma State will next play Azusa Pacific at home September 9, at Seawolf Soccer Field at 2pm PT.
