ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Led by stellar performances from Naaman Hightower, Lewayne Grant and Isaac Davidson, Sonoma State handily defeated Cal State San Bernardino by a final of 74-63 Friday night. The win marks both the Seawolves' fifth of the year as well as Head Coach Pat Fuscaldo's 350th in his career.
Things stayed close through much of the opening half, as the Seawolves and Coyotes found themselves even at 16 a piece with 10:37 remaining in the period. From there, Sonoma State went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:13, to open up a 26-18 lead.
Thanks to 17 points from the bench, including nine from Hightower, the Seawolves entered the break controlling a 33-28 advantage over San Bernardino.
The hosts opened the second half by working their way out to a 10-point margin, but after sinking four of five from the field, the Coyotes pulled back within four with 10:21 to go. However, the Seawolves had other plans. Hightower—who would go on to score a career-high 21 points—sunk four straight free throws before Jordan Hickman iced a shot from beyond the arc, to make it 59-49.
Sonoma State continued their rally as Davidson and Grant added six more to their totals before ending the game with respective 12- and 13-point performances. The biggest lead of the night came with 2:59 remaining on the clock, as Grant's free-throw pushed the Seawolves ahead by 16 points, if only momentarily. When the smoke cleared at the end of the night, Sonoma State emerged 74-63 victors.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 5-7 on the season including 3-5 in conference play. They return to action tomorrow night, as they will host Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30pm.
