ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Thanks to a pair of double digit performances from Ugochi Anudokem and Carly Gill, Sonoma State downed the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes 56-45, Friday night from the Wolves' Den. With 11 steals and 21 points off turnovers, the hosts capitalized on their opponents mistakes throughout the game and held the Coyotes to a mere 29% field goal percentage.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early lead, opening up a nine-point margin within the first four-and-a-half minutes, taking a 13-10 lead to the first-quarter break. The Coyotes started the second quarter with a 7-2 run to take a 17-15 lead, which proved to be their largest of the game, but the margin was quickly erased.
Burroughs put up seven of her nine points over the next 4:58, single-handedly shooting her way back to a five-point Seawolf lead, 22-17.
The Coyotes biggest run of the night came late in the contest as they made a final attempt to work their way back into the game. Jessica Mitz sunk a pair of jumpers to start the fourth quarter, opening up Sonoma State's largest lead of the night: eleven. However, San Bernardino immediately countered with an 11-3 run over the next 5:30. The visitor pulled as close as a 42-43 deficit with 4:21 remaining, but the Seawolves, led by seven points from Gill, merely built upon their lead to close out a 56-45 victory.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 5-6 and 2-5 in conference play before returning to the Wolves' Den Saturday night to take on Cal Poly Pomona. Tipoff is set for 7:30pm.
