ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — A Saturday-night matchup with Cal Poly Pomona ended in heartbreak for the Seawolves, as the Broncos rallied back from a nine-point deficit in the final 2:13 of regulation to tie the game at 70 and force overtime. The Seawolves put up six points in the five-minute overtime period but were unable to convert a buzzer-beater from beyond the arc to force double OT, instead falling 79-76.
With 6:25 remaining in the first quarter, Sonoma State had taken a 9-8 lead on a free-throw by Ugochi Anudokem and continued to build their lead through the end of the first half. Over the next 13 minutes the Seawolves put together a 24-12 run, led by eight points from Carly Gill—who would go on to score 19 on the night—to take a 30-20 lead.
Sonoma State entered the break up by six before Cal Poly Pomona came storming back to start the third quarter. Over the first 3:45 of the period, the Broncos put together 10-straight points to retake a slim 36-34 lead. The ten-point surge was countered by a three-pointer from Gill, kicking off a a 22-6 Sonoma State run over the next 5:26. By that time, the Seawolves had put themselves out to a comfortable 14-point lead—their largest of the game.
However, over the final 1:13 of the third quarter the Broncos raced their way back into the thick of things. Eight-straight points brought the visitors within six, as the quarter ended 56-50 in favor of the Seawolves.
Anudokem and Madison Burroughs, who finished with 15- and 19-point performances respectively, combined for 13 points through the final 10 minutes of regulation and five-minute overtime. Unfortunately for the Seawolves, the Broncos went 11-5 over the final 4:11 of regulation, forcing overtime and winning the game five minutes later, 79-76.
With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 5-7 and 2-6 in conference play. They return to action Wednesday, January 10 as they travel to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State.
