CHICO, Calif. – Sonoma State suffered just their second loss of the season Friday evening as the host Wildcats secured a late goal in the closing minutes of the match to win 1-0 from University Soccer Stadium.
The two teams remained neck-and-neck in all statistical categories through the first half before Chico State started to limit the Seawolves' opportunities in the second 45 minutes of play. After taking seven shots—three on frame—in the first half, the Seawolves only got only two shots off in the second half, neither which forced a save. However, Sonoma State also cut down on the Wildcats' attacking chances, cutting their shots in half which only forced one save of keeper
Kristen Spear in the second half.
After 87 minutes of scoreless play, it appeared the Seawolves would head to overtime for just the second time this season, but in the closing minutes of the match Chico found the tie-breaker via Susana Garcia.
On a cross from the top-right corner of the 18-yard box, Devon Morones found Garcia through traffic where she was able to tap it in for the game-winner.
With the loss, #25 Sonoma State falls to 8-2-3 on the season and 6-2-1 in conference play, ceding their first-place CCAA positioning to the Wildcats. The Seawolves return to action Sunday afternoon as they take on Stanislaus State at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m..
