ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – A pair of goals from
Luis Mendoza and
Sebastian Santos' CCAA-best ninth goal of the season helped the Seawolves to a 3-2 win over Cal State East Bay Thursday afternoon in their penultimate match of the season.
"We played very well and if it wasn't for their keeper making great saves and us being a little sharper on finishing, we could have scored a few more goals," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer after the game.
The Seawolves and Pioneers combined for a total of 49 shots through the 90-minute affair, with the Sonoma State putting 11 of their 27 on frame.
Brian Field, Santos and Mendoza put a majority of the pressure on goal, with the first two taking six shots each, while Mendoza was one shy of double-digits.
Field and Santos teamed up in the 27th minute when Brian took the ball into the center of the pitch, before crossing the ball out right to Sebastian. After dribbling into the six and beating the goalkeeper, Santos easily walked the ball toward goal, gently pushing the ball over the line for a 1-0 lead.
Mendoza then added to the Seawolf total in the 32nd and 66th minutes collecting four points in a game for the first time this season.
Five minutes after the opening goal,
Marco Barragan dribbled through traffic before finding Mendoza out on the right wing. Mendoza gathered and shot the ball far post, putting the Seawolves up 2-0.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Mendoza struck for a goalazo from 35 yards out. The rocket beat keeper Carlos Moreno as it was buried into the top left corner.
Sonoma State keeper
Derik Engebretsen made his first start in goal, making 11 saves—including crucial ones from point-blank range—limiting the Pioneers to a single goal up till the final minute of play.
On a foul inside the box with 10 seconds to play, East Bay was awarded a penalty kick, which Carter Magee converted to make it a 3-2 game before the Seawolves ran out the clock to secure their first win in conference play this season.
"It got a little crazy at the end with the late PK, but the result wasn't ever in doubt," said Ziemer. "It feels good to get back in the win column. We will be ready for Monterey Bay on Saturday. It's been a tough year with all of the injuries, but the guys have kept positive and are working hard and still playing with pride."
