Seawolves Lock Down Celebratory Senior Day Victory

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – In their final match of the season, the Sonoma State Seawolves put together a 1-0 shutout to defeat visiting Cal State Monterey Bay on a second half goal by Sebastian Santos. With the win, SSU finishes their season with a record of 4-10-3 and 2-8-2 in conference play.

"We've had a tough season result wise, but I am proud of how the boys finished up. We showed a lot of pride and won our last two games and finished strong," head coach Marcus Ziemer said after the game. "Our defense was outstanding. We battled hard and gave them very few chances. Derik Engebretsen was sharp in the goal and Evan Roehrig, Devin Anderson, Anthony Gonzalez-Cruz and Chava Gomez were outstanding. Sydney Cunningham did an excellent job sitting in front of the defense."

After a scoreless first half, the Seawolves returned from the break rapidly putting attempts on frame. In the second 45 minutes of play, Sonoma State put up 10 shots to the Otters' seven, one of which begat the Seawolves their game-winning goal.

A lofty cross from the Seawolves' defensive third by Antony Gonzalez-Cruz found Brian Field streaking down the left line. After dribbling around a defender, Field centered the ball on the ground to Santos who easily put the ball in the left corner of the goal.

The goal marked Santos' 10th of the season, tying him for first place in scoring within the CCAA rankings.

"Sebastian Santos and Brian Field kept them under pressure up top all day. Bryan was unlucky not to have a goal in the first half and he combined nicely with Sebastian for the game-winner in the second half," said Ziemer.

In his second-straight start, goalkeeper Derik Engebretsen made eight saves to lock down his first shutout in a Seawolves' uniform.

"We were in every game this year except one," recalled Ziemer, "and if five or six moments had gone on our way we could easily be in the CCAA tournament and fighting for an NCAA spot. The future is bright."

Sonoma State also honored their two departing seniors today, Alek Cucuk and Raad Aljabi, with a pregame ceremony featuring their family members.
