Seawolves Fall to Shorthanded Broncos

PETALUMA, Calif. – After falling down a goal early to Cal Poly Pomona, Sonoma State found themselves up a man and pulled back an equalizer to kick off the second half. Unfortunately, a pair of short-handed goals by the visitors allowed the Broncos to pull out a 3-1 victory in the final 27 minutes of the match.

"That was a tough loss," said head coach Marcus Ziemer after the match. "We tied it up and were in complete control of the game."

With a goal scored by Cal Poly Pomona in the 11th minute Sonoma State found themselves regrouping to press on the attack and equalize, and in the 40th minute, they found their break.

A dangerous tackle by the Broncos' Alon Grod brought down one of the Seawolves and on the foul, the official awarded Grod a straight red card.

While the ejection put the Broncos on their heels, it wasn't until after the half that Sonoma State found the equalizing goal.

In the 58th minute, a ball was served into the CPP box and after a handful of deflections Leonardo Gonzalez Perez back-heeled the ball inside the near post, beating keeper Jakob Hansen who was off his line on the other side of the six.

However in the 63rd minute, the momentum of the game completely shifted.

Pomona's Jimmie Villalobos slotted a through ball to Brain Peek and as he did so, the linesman raised his flag for an offsides call. "Everybody stopped except [Peek]. Our centerback and goalkeeper made a half-hearted attempt at the ball because everybody through the ball was offside but the referee spoke to the linesman and overruled him and let the goal stand," said Ziemer. "The hard lesson is that you have to play the whistle and not the flag."

In addition to the emotionally charged goal, Cal Poly further validated their win with a conversion in the 76th minute as Villalobos took a ball on the outside line, dribbled into the box and beat keeper Arturo Ornelas for the team's third goal of the game.

"We are very young and need to keep our heads up and try to get a win and our confidence back. San Bernardino is very good; we will be ready on Sunday," said Ziemer.

The Seawolves kick off their match with the Coyotes at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at Seawolf Soccer Field.
