San Diego, Calif. – A pair of Seawolves scored in double figures as Sonoma State held off Point Loma 59-51 Saturday afternoon by overcoming a late deficit. The Seawolves are now 2-1 with the win while the host Sea Lions drop to 0-3.
Kylie Kiech recorded a season-high 18 points (ten free throws and four field goals), eight rebounds and five steals in her 28-minute performance against the Sealions. While teammate Sophia Northern notched a season-high 14 points with, one rebound and one block respectively.
Ugochi Anudokem led the pack in rebounds with ten while
Taylor Todd grabbed six.
The Seawolves held the lead for a majority of the first quarter, 11-9 with less than 3 minutes on the clock. Tides changed as the Sea Lions strung four baskets together to come ahead 16-12.
Sonoma closed the gap in the second half outscoring the Sea Lions 12-to-10 late in the quarter, making six of the final seven basketballs of the half.
Through the first 20 minutes of play, the Seawolves shot 29.6% (8-for-27) from the floor, and 53.3% (8-for-15) at the free throw line.
Out of the gate, the Seawolves found themselves in a 10-point hole (36-26), capturing its only lead in the third with 30 seconds left (37-36) thanks to
Ra'Shanae Johnsons fast-break layup in the paint.
The Seawolves owned the final quarter outscoring the Sea Lions 22 to 12, tying the game in the opening minute, with a layup in the paint by Anudokem. State held tight to its lead, holding Point Loma to four baskets in the remaining of four minutes of the game, defeating the Sea Lions 59-51.
In the second half, the Seawolves shot 41.4% (12-for-29) from the field and 20% (1-for-5) from the three-point line, and 71.4% (10-for-14) at the keyhole.
Sonoma State grabbed 16 offensive rebounds helping them to a 14-13 edge in second-chance points.
