Defense Show the Way

Rohnert Park, Calif. – A pair of Seawolves scored in double figures as Sonoma State held off Monterey Bay 57-43 Saturday afternoon by maintaining a consistent lead over the Otters throughout the 40 minutes of competition.
 
Sonoma is now 1-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall, while the visiting Otters dropped to 0-2 in conference and 0-5 overall.
 
Ugochi Anudokem had another stellar game for the Seawolves. The junior scored 16 points, her fourth straight double-figure scoring effort while grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, while teammate Kylie Kiech recorded a team-high 17 points.
 
Jessica Solis and Ra'Shanae Johnson both went 2-for-2 at the free throw line helping the Seawolves to a 73.7% (14-for-19) performance at the line.
 
Sonoma State held Monterey Bay to single digits throughout the first quarter, outscoring them 18-7.
 
Through the first 20 minutes of play, the Seawolves shot 46.43% (13-for-28) from the floor, 40% (4-for-10) at the three-point line and 63.64% (7-for-11) at the free throw line, to gain a 20-point (37-57) lead over Monterey Bay at halftime. 
 
During the opening minutes of the final quarter, Sonoma State all but put the game away. In just under four minutes the Seawolves went on an 8-4 scoring spurt to take a 53-29 edge over the Otters.
 
In the second half, the Seawolves shot 20.7% (6-for-29) from the field and 12.5% (1-for-8) from the three-point line, and 87.5% (7-for-8) at the keyhole. 
 
Sonoma State snagged nine offensive rebounds helping them to a 17-10 edge in second-chance points.
 
NEXT UP: The Seawolves take to the road this week as they travel to Stanislaus for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff on Thursday.
