Santa Clara, Calif. – Seawolves concluded its four day-three game weekend with a midseason non-conference 82-54 loss to Division I Santa Clara, the Seawolves are now 5-5 overall and remain 3-2 in the CCAA.
Sonoma State stayed within single digits of its Division I opponent for a majority of the game.
Aaron Porcil and
Wesley Gilbert put on season-high performances against the Broncos. Porcil displayed with 13-points, shooting 5-for-7 from the field, going 2-for-2 at the arc and 1-for-1 at the free throw line. Wesley, a personal high of 14-points, 4-for-7 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity line. Both Porcil and Wesley served a pair of assists.
In the opening 20 minutes of play the Seawolf defense held Santa Clara to 16.7 percent (2-for-12) from the arc and 34.5 percent (10-for-29), tying the Broncos three times in the first half. Sonoma State outscored the Broncos off turnovers 11 to their 8 and fast break points 4 to 0 to trail Santa Clara 34-29 at the half.
Gilbert led the Seawolves second-half scoring efforts with a pair of points from the floor, and three free throws for seven on the half. Santa Clara scored 10 of the second half opening 17 points to gain a healthy 10-point lead over Sonoma. The Seawolves fightback ended in an 82-54 nonconference loss.
