Playoff Hopes Dwindle In 65-59 Loss At Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. -- Jessica Mitz scored a team-high 15 points and Madison Burroughs chipped in with 10, but the Sonoma State women's basketball team squandered a five-point lead in the fourth quarter to suffer a 65-59 loss to host Cal Poly Pomona Friday night at Kellogg Gym in Pomona.

The Seawolves fall to 10-13 overall and sit in ninth place in the CCAA standings at 7-12, two and a half games back of eighth-place Cal State San Bernardino with three games to play in the regular season.  The Broncos, looking to secure the No. 2 seed in the CCAA Championship Tournament in two weeks, improve to 17-8 (14-6 CCAA).

Sonoma State led for 16 minutes in the contest, whereas Cal Poly Pomona held a lead for 15 and a half minutes, including the final four-plus minutes of the ballgame.  In fact, after Jerrica Crosby hit a three-pointer with 7:33 to go in the game to put the Seawolves up by five points at 52-47, the Broncos finished the game on an 18-7 run, knocking down 12 of those points at the free throw line.

For the third straight game, and four out of the last five, the Seawolves shot the ball extremely well, connecting on more than half of their shots, hitting 23 of 45 attempts for a 51.1 percent output.  The defense also stymied the Broncos' shooting efforts, holding the hosts to just 33.3 percent on 18 of 54 shots (including 1 of 9 from long range).  However, Cal Poly Pomona cashed in for 27 points on 22 Sonoma State turnovers.  CPP also outscored SSU in second-chance points, 17-5, thanks to a 15-7 edge in offensive rebounds.  In addition, the Broncos took advantage of their opportunities at the charity stripe, tallying 28 of their points from the line.  Comparatively, the Seawolves took just nine shots from the line, making seven of them.

Sonoma State will play a must-win game Saturday night at Cal State San Bernardino to keep its playoff hopes alive.  Tipoff from Coussoulis Arena is set for 5:30 pm.
