OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Seawolves wrapped a home-and-home weekend series sweep of Holy Names University Saturday, with a pair of wins over the Hawks. With the sweep, Sonoma State starts the season 3-0, while the Hawks fall to an 0-3 opening.
Game 1
Bryce Nagata led the Seawolves from the batter's box in game one of Saturday's double-header, as the centerfielder went 1 for 3, reaching base three times, and crushing a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Seawolves' leadoff man worked a walk to start the game and scored Sonoma State's first run on a wild pitch.
In the third inning, Joshua Lenny, who homered in his Seawolf debut Friday, clubbed his second jack of the season in as many games.
The offensive onslaught was more than enough support for starter
Tyson Canfield, who threw four no-hit innings, gave up a run and struck out six. Despite the strong performance, it was
Jackson Berumen who earned the win with his three shutout innings of work.
Game 2
In game two, the Seawolves rode a five-run third inning to victory as the visitors capitalized on a flurry of errors by the Hawks. Sonoma State entered the inning trailing 4-1 before
Mitch West reached base safely on a dropped fly ball to short. Three batters later, the bases became loaded for
Jake Sahagian who hit one on the ground to the pitcher. Sahagian was retired but on the throw, two runs came in to score, cutting the SSU deficit to one.
Nathan Mann tied up the game with a single through the single through the left side before two consecutive throwing errors by the shortstop allowed
Drew Downing and
Evan Seidell to reach base safely, and two runs come across the plate.
The Hawks made a late comeback attempt, pulling within a single run in the eighth inning, but the Seawolves held on for the three-game weekend sweep.
Sonoma State will return to action next weekend as they travel to Fresno Pacific to take on the Sunbirds in a three-game non-conference series. Friday's first pitch is slated for 6pm.
