LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Brielle Vidmar tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout Friday afternoon to lift the Sonoma State softball team to a 2-0 victory over host and previously undefeated UC San Diego in Friday's nightcap in La Jolla. The Seawolves (4-3, 1-1 CCAA) suffered a 9-1 mercy-rule loss in the opener.
Offensively on the day,
Cameron Kirtlan led the way going 3 for 6 with a triple and an RBI -- the RBI triple coming in the top of the fourth inning of game two to score
Alyssa Cuffia and put the Seawolves up 2-0, which eventually became the final score of the day. Sonoma took the early lead in the second game as
Julie Davis scampered home on a wild pitch in the top of the first, accounting for the only runs in Friday's finale. It would prove to be enough as Vidmar (1-1) allowed just the four hits in the contest, all singles.
In game one, the only SSU run came home when
Alex Flores scored on a passed ball in the top of the fifth inning.
Brigid Ruiz (1-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Gabby Dupree took over in the second and went the rest of the way, allowing the final six Triton runs.
Sonoma State and UC San Diego will go to battle two more times Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.
