LA JOLLA, Calif. -- After
Brielle Vidmar shut down UC San Diego for the second straight game, helping the Sonoma State softball team to a 4-2 win in Saturday's opener, the Seawolves suffered an 8-5 setback in the series finale to split the doubleheader in La Jolla. The Seawolves move to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA. The Tritons move to 7-2 (2-2 CCAA).
Vidmar again dominated the UCSD lineup with her complete game effort in game one, giving up two runs on seven hits in the game. It allowed for the Seawolf offense to provide enough for her second win of the season in the circle. Sonoma scored two runs in both the third inning and the fourth.
Alex Flores scored
Brigid Ruiz with a single and
Karly Macadangdang laid down a bunt later to score Flores for the 2-0 lead after three frames. In the fourth,
Cameron Kirtlan laced an RBI double to right field scoring
Alyssa Cuffia before
Cierra Hylton singled home
Sarah Langley for a 4-0 advantage.
The hosts finally put two up on the board in the fifth, but that was all Vidmar would allow the rest of the way.
It didn't take long for UC San Diego to make their statement in game two, posting six runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter
Teresa Danenberg, who lasted just a third of an inning.
Gabby Dupree came on in relief and stopped the bleeding, allowing just two more runs the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, the Seawolf offense began to slowly chip away at the deficit, starting with an RBI triple by Flores and a RBI double by
Lindsey Calcany Blair in the top of the third. Ruiz singled home Kirtlan in the fourth, and in the fifth, Langley hit
Malory Masajlo home with a bases-loaded single, then Macadangdang scored after a fielding error to make it 6-5. However, UC San Diego got some insurance runs on a two-run home run by Sharona Mataele in the bottom of the sixth to seal the UCSD win.
Calcany Blair and Ruiz had two hits each in the game two loss.
Sonoma State will make its 2018 home debut Wednesday when it hosts Dominican in a single game at 2:00 pm at the Seawolf Softball Field.
