ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Seawolves played a pair of tight games Sunday afternoon as they earned their second straight win via walk-off in game one, before falling by a narrow 3-2 margin in game two. With the Sunday split, Sonoma State moves to 13-12 on the season and 9-10 in conference play.
Game 1
A back and forth game swung in the Seawolves favor in the late innings of game one, coming back from a four run deficit to score three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, forcing extra innings and a walk-off finish in the twelfth.
With the score 6-2 in favor of the visiting Toros, Sonoma State found their opportunity to get back into the game in the eighth when
Alex Emerick reached base safely on an error by shortstop, Jesus Sanchez.
Rayson Romero sent him on to third with a double to left, before
Bryce Nagata hit a sac fly to center, allowing Emerick to come in and score on the play.
Anthony Clyma followed with a single up the middle to bring in Romero, and the junior left fielder then stole second, setting up
Jake Sahagian to drive him home the following play with a single to right and pull the Seawolves within one: 6-5.
The ninth inning began with Sonoma State down by one and looking to extend the game. The Seawolves took advantage of a dropped ball by the Toros' right fielder Gomez. With
Zach Guardino on second and one out,
Patrick Tolbert skied a ball to right which looked playable, however on the way down, Gomez lost the ball allowing Tolbert to reach second and Guardino to advance a base.
Matthew Richards, who pinch hit for
Matt Hill, was then intentionally walked to create a force at any base. Romero though, came through with a hard hit ball to third. The ball hit off the glove of the third baseman Estaban Ortega, everyone advanced a base and Romero flew down the line, to beat out an RBI base hit.
With the bases loaded and only one out, the odds seemed to be in Sonoma State's favor for a ninth inning walkoff. However,
Bryce Nagata lined a ball to second that was caught and thrown back to third to double off the lead runner, end the inning and force extras.
Things remained relatively quiet until the 12th, when the Seawolves locked down the win. Clyma led off the inning with a single to second before advancing to second on a sac bunt.
Joshua Montelongo then worked an intentional walk to put two on with one out. Guardino, who had already put together a three hit game, then drove in the game winner with a walk-off double into the outfield.
Game 2
In comparison to the crazy 12-inning marathon of game one, the second game of the Sunday twin-bill proved relatively tame. After each team scored two runs in the first inning, Dominguez Hills found the one run they'd need to lock up the 3-2 win in the third inning.
With a runner on second and two outs in the first, the Toros' Ortega smacked an RBI single to right, before coming in to score two batters later on a seeing-eye single to short. Seawolf starter
Jackson Berumen limited the scoring to two, striking out the last batter of the inning, before Sonoma State score two of their own.
A single to center, followed by a bunt single off the bat of Emerick placed runners at first and second with nobody out. Emerick and the lead runner, Nagata, each advanced on a wild pitch, pulling them 180 and 90 feet of the plate, respectively. Guardino's groundout to second plated Nagata and sent Emerick to third, who then scored on Montelongo's single to right.
Dominguez Hills found their third run of the game in the top of the third, bringing Ortega all the way in from first on an RBI double to left by Stephen Kish. That run would prove the difference as the Toros would take game two 3-2 in seven innings.
The Seawolves and Toros will return to Seawolf Diamond tomorrow for their final game of the four-game set. First pitch is slated for 11:00 am.
