Game Recap: Baseball |

Seawolves Split Friday Doubleheader with Broncos

POMONA, Calif. -- Following a game one loss, the Sonoma State baseball team bounced back in Friday's nightcap to salvage a doubleheader split on the road at Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos took game one by a 10-3 margin before Sonoma stormed back for a 5-3 victory in game two. The split leaves the Seawolves with a 15-14 overall record and an 11-12 mark in CCAA play entering Saturday's series finale.

Game 1

Sonoma State built up a 3-0 lead by way of single runs in the first and second, and a solo home run by Matthew Richards in the fourth. From there, it would be all Cal Poly Pomona.

The Bronco bats broke through for a run in the bottom of the fourth, then rallied for six runs in the seventh to grab a lead they would not relinquish. A pair of home runs in the eighth inning would put the game out of reach.

Richards finished the game 2 for 3 while Bryce Nagata and Nicco Toni also had two hits each.

Dominic Garihan worked into the seventh, but was dinged with the loss after giving up three runs, just two of them earned. He struck out two and walked three.

Game 2

While an unearned run gave the Seawolves a first inning 1-0 lead in game two, the Broncos were quick to erase it, plating a run in the third and two more in the fourth.

The Seawolves began their charge in the sixth when Jake Sahagian doubled down the right field line to score Rayson Romero and cut the deficit to one. The comeback would be complete in the seventh inning when Romero doubled home two runs, putting Sonoma up 4-3.

An insurance run was tacked on in the seventh when Romero scored on a wild pitch.

Romero ended the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Bryce Nagata also scored twice and supplied a double and a single.

Jackson Berumen earned the win, tossing six solid innings and allowing just a single earned run. Tyson Canfield picked up the save.

Tomorrow

The series will conclude tomorrow with a single game starting at 11:00 am.
