TURLOCK, Calif. – A stormy weekend in Northern California pushed back Sonoma State's four-game series a day but the Seawolves made the most of their Saturday double-header, winning the first match up 7-6 in twelve innings, before stifling a late comeback attempt by the Warriors in game two, and sweeping the day with a 4-3 final.
Game 1
Stanislaus State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a sac fly to right. However, the lead would be short-lived as
Daniel Hawkins turned on a 3-1 pitch in the top of the second inning belting a homer to center to tie things back up at one. The Warriors scored their second of the game in the bottom of the second with an RBI double to right-center, momentarily reclaiming the lead before Sonoma State brought out the bats two innings later.
First pitch swinging,
Zach Guardino smacked a double to right to lead off the fourth before
Joshua Montelongo worked his way aboard with a hit-by-pitch. Two batters later, Hawkins came up clutch once again and drove in the lead runner with an RBI single. Another beaned batter loaded up the bases for
Nathan Mann who swung at the first pitch he saw and cleared the bases with a double down the right field line.
The Seawolves would hold their 5-2 lead into the seventh inning before Jack Large homered to right and the Warriors tied things up in the eighth with a sac fly and RBI single.
With the score knotted at five after nine innings, the Seawolves looked to push across a run in extras, and ultimately did so. With one out, Clyma took a pitch to the body to work his way aboard. It appeared as if the Warriors' Chase Wheatcroft would prevent any scoring in the inning, striking out the next batter looking before getting Montelongo to K swinging. However, in an attempt to complete the latter strikeout after dropping the ball, catcher Ethan Utler threw down to first errantly, allowing Montelongo to reach base safely and Clyma to come in and score.
The Seawolves were unable to finish things off in the bottom of the frame, as a double, bunt base hit, and a throwing error allowed the Warriors to tie things up in the bottom of the 10th. It would take two more innings but eventually the Seawolves would wrap up the game in the 12th on an RBI single by Clyma, before
Grant St. Martin shut the door on Stanislaus with a 1-2-3 inning.
Game 2
Sonoma State started the scoring in of game two thanks to
Nicco Toni, who shot an RBI single to left-center in the top of the second, and for the first four innings that's all the support Seawolf starter
Tyson Canfield would need. The right-handed junior would go five frames, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out two along the way.
Stanislaus was able to crack through in Canfield's final inning as a walk, single and HBP would load the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Anthony Enwiya would hit into a fielder's choice that would score the lead runner but a fly ball to center and a grounder to third would limit the damage to just a single run.
Two innings later, the Seawolves retook the lead with a three-spot in the seventh. Clyma would come in to score on a throwing error by the shortstop and St. Martin picked up an RBI single before Montelongo crossed the plate on a fielding error by the third baseman.
The Warriors made a late comeback attempt in the ninth, plating Large with a Ethan Utler RBI double, before the latter came in to score on a two-out double by Enwiya. However, with the tying run at second,
Matt Stafford would induce a grounder on an 0-2 pitch to end the game.
Sonoma State returns to action, wrapping up the four-game series with the Warriors tomorrow in Turlock. Game one is set for a 12pm start.
