Seawolves Drop Series Opener to Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Following a four game sweep of Cal State San Bernardino, Sonoma State traveled to Southern California for a series with Cal State LA. The Golden Eagles got the better of the Seawolves in game one, defeating the visitor by a final score of 9-4.

Coming off of a complete game win last week, Dominic Garihan looked to replicate his success, this time against Cal State LA, but unfortunately only survived four innings on Friday, giving up seven runs, five of which were earned.

The Golden Eagles started the scoring in the bottom of the first, hitting a pair of RBI singles through the right side to quickly post two runs on the board. However, the Seawolves quickly countered in the top of the second with two runs of their own. With the bases loaded, Nicco Toni forced in a run on catcher's interference before Nathan Mann earned a seven-pitch walk to tie the game at two.

LA found their way back on top in the fourth inning, and put some distance between themselves and their opponent. A pair of Golden Eagles walked their way aboard to lead off the inning before a one-out single through the left side brought home a run. Another single in the same spot pushed the home team's lead to 4-2, then following a fly out to center, another pair of base hits each drove in a run. Unfortunately, on the last of those two, an error on the Seawolves shortstop allowed an additional run to score, capping a five-run fourth.

The Golden Eagles built their lead to seven runs with a pair of bases-loaded walks in the sixth, which would prove an insurmountable deficit for the Seawolves to overcome. Sonoma State added two runs in the eighth on a Joshua Lenney solo shot and an RBI single by Evan Seidell, but five runs is as close as Sonoma State would come, falling 9-4 in the opener.

With the loss the Seawolves fall to 20-15 and 16-13 in conference play. They return to Reeder Field tomorrow for games two and three of the series. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
