Seawolves Split Day With Gators

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State softball team split their first two games of their four-game series against the San Francisco State University Gators today at Seawolf Softball Diamond. The Seawolves took game one with a score of 2-1 and were shutout in the second game 5-0.

Game 1
Brigid Ruiz received the start today for game one for the Seawolves. She pitched the entire game giving up seven hits, one run and getting one strikeout. She had trouble in the fourth when she loaded the bases and a run scored with only one out. She managed to get the next two batters to foul out and pop up in an inning that could have not gone in her favor.

Down 1-0 going into the fifth, the Seawolves rallied to get two runs in the inning. A single from Lindsey Calcany Blair, which was followed by a single by Julie Davis, putting runners on first and second. In what an attempted sacrifice bunt from Cameron Kirtlan, Calcany Blair was thrown out at third, but Kirtlan reached base safely at first. With runners on first and second, Alee Balanon then doubled to left-center scoring both runners to give the Seawolves the 2-1 lead.

Over the next two innings, San Francisco State would try to respond and managed to get a runner to third in the sixth inning, but couldn't manage to score. Ruiz only gave up two hits over the final two innings and got the complete game victory improving her to 11-7. Lindsey Cassidy pitched strong six innings for the Gators giving up six hits and two runs, but received the loss and moves to 10-12.

Game 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Seawolves were shutout due to dominant pitching from San Francisco State pitcher Karla Soto. She limited the Seawolves to three hits over seven innings.

Brielle Vidmar got the start for the Seawolves in game two. She went 1.1 innings and gave up five runs (three earned). Issues began for Vidmar in the second innings when Mallory Cleveland reached first base off a dropped popup ball by Lindsey Calcany Blair. The Gators would take advantage of the opportunity that presented itself and score five runs in the second inning.

The Seawolves offense was quiet in game two, only recording three hits. After Vidmar was pulled, the Seawolves bullpen went the remaining 5.2 innings giving up one hit and getting one strikeout. The Seawolf starter received the loss and moves to 11-7 while Karla Soto got the win and moves to 8-10.

The Seawolves are now 26-19, 18-14 in the CCAA, while the Gators move to 21-27 and 16-17 in the CCAA. The two teams will complete their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader. First pitch will be at noon.
