Seawolves Split Day One In Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. — On the final weekend of regular CCAA softball season, the Seawolves traveled up to Arcata, California to take on Humboldt State. In the first two games of the four game series, the Seawolves split the two games, winning the first game 3-1. The Seawolves lost the second game in a mercy-rule shortened game 12-4 in six innings.

Game 1
Teresa Danenberg, who got the start in game one, pitched a complete game while giving up one run on six hits while striking out two. With the win, she moves to 3-4 on the year.

The Seawolves struck early in the game on a Jenn Amaral home run in the second inning. It marked Amaral's second round-tripper of the year and her first since March 14. In the sixth inning, Sonoma added to their lead when Alee Balanon pinch hit for Aubrey Blankenburg. With runners on second and third, Balanon would hit a double into left field, easily scoring both runners and to give Sonoma a 3-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the sixth Humboldt responded with a run of their own cutting the Seawolf lead to two.

Going into the bottom of the seventh, Humboldt still trailed 3-1 and were down to their final three outs. Danenberg got the first batter she faced on a foul out, however she gave up a double to the next batter, bringing the tying run at the plate. With the runner at second, Danenberg induced a flyout and a subsequent groundout to retire the side and seal the victory.

Jasmine Hill got the loss for the Lumberjacks, she went five innings and gave up a run. She moves to 8-11 on the year. Lindsey Calcanyblair went 2-for-3 in game one with a double.

Game 2
After the morning victory, the Seawolves looked to continue their winning ways in game two. Sonoma State got an early lead after scoring first in the third inning. What started off with a Malory Masajilo single turned into a four-run inning, highlighted by Alee Balanon's two run double. However, in the bottom of the inning, the Lumberjacks responded to score three runs, narrowing the Seawolf lead to one.

Humboldt took lead in the fourth inning when they scored two unearned runs. Despite being down, the Seawolves remained down by just a slim 5-4 deficit until the sixth, when the Jacks put together seven runs in the inning. The sixth inning was highlighted by an Amber Orchard 3-run homerun. Humboldt sealed a mercy-rule victory when Kelly Sonnemann singled allowing two runs to score giving the Lumberjacks an eight run, lead bringing the mercy rule into effect.

Brielle Vidmar got the loss for the Seawolves, she pitched 3.1 innings in relief giving up nine runs (six earned) on seven hits. She moves to 11-8 on the year. Lexee Sheiring got the win for Humboldt State going six innings and giving up four runs (one earned) on three hits. She improves to 10-9.

The Seawolves go into the final day of the regular season at 27-22, 19-17 in the CCAA. Their division record is currently the fourth best in the division. The Seawolves find themselves behind Stanislaus State and above Cal State San Bernardino. The top four teams qualify for the CCAA tournament. The Seawolves will finish off the season tomorrow wrapping up its four game series with Humboldt starting at 11:00 am.
