HAYWARD, Calif. — Going 3-for-5 with four runs scored, and falling just a triple shy of the cycle, Seawolf first baseman
Joshua Montelongo led the Sonoma State to a 13-4 game one rout of Cal State East Bay, before falling in game two by a final of 5-2.
Game 1
After a rocky first inning
Dominic Garihan found his rhythm going 7.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned), and managing to strike out two. He got the win and moves to 3-5 on the year. After giving up two runs in the first inning the Seawolves responded in the second inning with a big six-run inning that featured a
Matthew Richards triple to score Josuha Lenney and a Montelongo single that drove in two runs. At the end of the second inning the Seawolves lead the Pioneers 6-2.
Cal State East Bay would narrow their deficit in the fourth inning, scoring two runs and cutting the Seawolves' lead to 6-4. However in the seventh, Sonoma State built up some more insurance runs.
On a 2-2 count Montelongo mashed his third home run of the year. Additionally
Nicco Toni drove in
Anthony Clyma giving the Seawolves an 8-4 lead. Over the course of the two innings the Seawolves would managed to score four more runs pushing their lead to 12-4.
Rayson Romero went 2-3 with two walks.
Zach Guardino went 1-4 with two runs scored.
Game 2
Jackson Berumen got the start for game two for the Seawolves. He was quickly welcomed by a Raymond Jones single. After two ground outs, Jones, standing on third, raced home to score on a wild pitch by Berumen, giving East Bay a 1-0 lead. In the second inning Jones struck again, this time with a single scoring one run. However
Mitch West threw out Robinson who tried to score from third preserving a run for the Seawolves. Sonoma trailed 2-0 after two innings.
The Seawolves managed to tie the game in the top of third. Highlighted by a
Rayson Romero single scoring
Bryce Nagata, and
Zach Guardino's RBI groundout. The Pioneers managed regain the lead in the bottom of the inning with a single by Dakota Conners scoring Adam Hollar, but in the sixth innings the home team continued to push their lead to three. In the bottom of the seventh, East Bay called in Andrew Fernandez for the save opportunity and he managed to close out the game and get his first save on the year.
Berumen pitched 5.2 innings on 98 pitches giving up five runs, he moves to 4-4 with the loss. RJ Hanson, with the win, moves to 5-3 on the year.
After the games today the Seawolves move to 24-21 and 20-19 in the CCAA. They play their final game in the series tomorrow at Cal State East Bay. First pitch will be at noon.
