SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sonoma State's two early runs would not prove enough as the Seawolves fell to San Francisco State's comeback bid 7-3 Thursday afternoon from the bay.
Zach Guardino got the scoring started in the third with a single up the middle, plating
Bryce Nagata on the play. In the fourth,
Joshua Montelongo wore a pitch before advancing to second on a passed ball to set up
Anthony Clyma's RBI single to left.
Unfortunately, then the Gators started to string together some runs. In the bottom of the frame, Seawolf starter
Michael Warning allowed a one-out single and hit a batter before throwing errantly and allowing both runners to move into scoring position.
Tyson Canfield then took over for Warning on the mound. Johny Juarez brought in the Gators' first run with a sac fly to right, before Connor Fidone tied the game with an RBI single to second.
With the score tied at two, San Francisco State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, looking to open up a lead. Jack Harris worked a six-pitch walk to make the score 3-2, prompting a pitching change.
Rory McDaid took over on the mound and retired both batters he saw but allowed one run to score on a sac fly off the bat of Jordan Abernathey.
The Seawolves prevented the Gators from pulling away in the sixth as they added a run on
Rayson Romero's fielder's choice, bringing home
Nathan Mann, but SF State's third-straight two-run inning once again expanded their lead, this time to 6-3.
The Gators added their final run of the game with an RBI single through the right side in the eighth, sealing the victory for the home team.
With the loss,
Tyson Canfield moves to 3-4 on the year and Sonoma State falls to 24-23 and 20-21 in CCAA play. The Seawolves will host games two and three of the series tomorrow on senior day at Seawolf Diamond, before returning to SF State for game four. Friday's first pitch is set for 11:00 am.
