ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sebastian Santos took center stage for the Seawolves in their 2018 opener, scoring the game's first goal and notching a pair of assists, however three unanswered goals by Western Washington proved the Seawolves' undoing as Sonoma State fell 4-3 in their first match of the season.
Assisted by Marco Barrigan, Santos opened the game with a goal in the 14th minute of play. Going opposite post from just within the right corner of the box, the sophomore striker converted on his first shot, putting the Seawolves up 1-0.
However, Western Washington countered soon after as Ryan Schaefer scored the equalizer just three minutes later.
In the 22nd minute a pass from Santos found
Luis Mendoza, who then took a strike from 25 yards out. The ball flew past the Vikings' diving keeper and put Sonoma State up by a score of 2-1, which would hold through the end of the first half.
Just five minutes after the break the Seawolves surged ahead with their third goal, this time coming off the boot of
Brian Field. Working his way into the box, Santos laid off a pass to his right side to find Field unmanned. Field then sent the ball far-post to convert the shot and push his squad's margin to two goals.
Unfortunately, the Vikings found their way back in the final 25 minutes of regulation. At the 65th minute Schaefer fed Drew Farnsworth who cut the Seawolves' lead to one before Stephen Jinneman tied the game with a 75th minute converstion.
The late goals forced the teams into overtime and at the 95th minute a Viking was brought down in the box allowing Georg Cholewa to sink a golden-goal penalty kick.
The Seawolves return to action to face the Seattle Pacific Falcons this Saturday at Seawolf Soccer Field in a non-conference match. First kick is slated for 5 p.m..
