Santos, Mendoza lead Seawolves in Overtime Thriller

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – A free kick in the 92nd minute set up Sonoma State for an electric overtime win with Sebastian Santos walking the Seawolves off as 2-1 victors over Seattle Pacific.

Heading into overtime for the second time in as many games, the Seawolves drew an opportune foul at the top of the box just two minutes into golden-goal overtime. Luis Mendoza, who scored the opening goal of the match set up the ball and blasted his shot through, pinging off the right-side upright. The ball bounced back out to the left side of the box where Santos collected and drilled the game-winner inside the near post.

"That was a huge win. SPU is a quality opponent and it was important on us to hold on and get the win," said head coach Marcus Ziemer after the game.

Santos' golden goal marks his second conversion this season, and with just two games under the Seawolves belt, the sophomore striker has also earned two assists.

"We have several players that have been outstanding.  Obviously Sebastian Santos has been very dangerous and is scoring goals and Luis Diaz has been very dangerous and leads the team up front.  Evan Roehrig has played center back and done very well, but it was good to get Anthony Gonzales back so Evan can move wide. Marco Barragan and Kyle Owings did a lot of chasing and dirty work, which we needed. Ulysses Vega, who is a true freshman, has been outstanding and has paired with Sid Cunningham in the midfield well," added Ziemer.

The head coach stressed that the team has been focused on their work rate, and that the success of the squad is truly dependent upon on the strength of the defense. After a tough loss on Thursday to Western Washington, the Seawolves jumped right out of the gates, shutting Seattle Pacific down for 71 minutes.

A chippy game, which featured 29 total fouls between the two teams, came to a point in the 59th minute when the Falcons went a man down. Just shy of mid-field, Evan Roehrig jumped up on an attempted header but was knocked down by Sam Rucklos who was given a straight red on the play.

Just six minutes later, Luis Mendoza broke through the scoreless tie.

Slotting Santos to the top of the box, Mendoza received back a lateral one-two pass through traffic before dribbling into the box, finding space and releasing his shot. The ball tipped off the gloves of Seattle Pacific's keeper but continued rolling, finding the side netting of the goal.

However, the lead proved short-lived as Seattle Pacific broke through with a combination just inside the top of the box. With a cross from the left side to the right, Samuel Agyei one-touched Alden Massey's connection to tie things back up at one.

Despite continuous attacks, neither team was able to score before the end of regulation, but Santos made quick work of the team's opportunity in overtime.

Impressed by his team's performance, Ziemer concluded "I really like our team.  We are going to have to work hard for everything, but it is a good group."

After playing two matches in the last three days, the Seawolves will enjoy a couple days of rest before traveling to Montana for a pair of games at the end of next week, facing University of Mary and Montana State Billings at Yellowjacket Soccer Field on September 7th and 9th, respectively.
