BILLINGS, Mont. – A second-half brace from
Brian Field proved the difference in Sonoma State's Friday, non-conference match with the University of Mary at Montana State Billings' 2018 Rimrock Classic.
"We played well and generated a lot of chances, but could've put the game away in the first half," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer following the match. "Credit to University of Mary for hanging in there and keeping it close."
The Seawolves' penultimate match before jumping into conference play next week, stayed scoreless through the first 67 minutes of play before the visiting squad jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the later part of the second half.
Following a cross by
Evan Roehrig from the left corner, a scramble ensued in front of the goal where Field came in to finish the shot on frame, breaking the scoreless tie. Just ten minutes later, Field doubled Sonoma State's margin.
On a corner kick,
Sebastian Santos centered the ball into the box where Field headed it directly into the far corner on the fly, pushing the Seawolves out to a 2-0 lead.
"
Brian Field had a great day," said Ziemer. "
Arturo Ornelas made a couple of big saves in the goal, including a penalty kick—a play which would've made it 2-1."
With the win, the Seawolves move to 2-1-0 on the season before heading into their final match before their conference opener with Humboldt State next Wednesday.
"We are going to enjoy the win the rest of the day and then tomorrow start preparing for our game on Sunday. We are going to a nearby lake to do some regeneration."
Sonoma State's Sunday match versus Montana State Billings is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
