ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Coming off a mid-week double-overtime battle with Humboldt State, the Sonoma State Seawolves fended off visiting San Francisco State for 70 minutes before falling on a pair of late goals, dropping their first conference game of the season, 2-0.
When asked about his team's performance, head coach
Marcus Ziemer articulated, "I thought we played great for 60 minutes but ran out of gas. The Wednesday overtime game versus Humboldt took a lot out of us. It's tough playing a fresh team."
"SF state is very good with a lot of seniors. I think they will be one of the top teams in the CCAA. They took it to us for the first 10 minutes, but we settled in and gave them everything they could handle. Hopefully we can play them again."
A back-and-forth game featured limited shots through the first half, forcing only one save by either goalkeeper in the first 45 minutes of play.
"Our defense was solid." added Ziemer. "Anthony Gonzales," who had spent the last year out with a knee injury "was very good and is getting better every game."
The final 30 minutes of play became chippy as both teams drew numerous fouls and four yellow cards were awarded. Despite the eight fouls given up by the Gators—compared to the Seawolves' four—San Francisco found themselves able to capitalize on set piece opportunities.
Following a foul just outside the 18, Aydan Bowers sent a left-footed, in-swinger up around the SSU wall and into the top right corner of the net, past a diving
Arturo Ornelas. The 70th minute goal broke a scoreless tie and in the 82nd minute, Jonathon Orozco doubled up the margin.
After Ornelas saved a shot by Nolan Parker at point-blank range, the ball rolled back out to Orozco, who collected the deflection and fired the ball home for the second goal of the game.
With the loss the Seawolves fall to 2-2-2 and 0-1-1 in CCAA play. Sonoma State will head south to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at the StubHub Center in Carson on Friday.
