ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Sonoma State continued their quick start to the season, defeating San Francisco State 2-0 from Seawolf Soccer Field Friday afternoon, improving to 4-0-2 on the season and 2-0-0 in CCAA play.
"I'm really proud of the team," said head coach
Emiria Salzmann Dunn after the game. "With this being our fourth game in nine days, I have to applaud the energy and determination of our players to win the game. SF is a great opponent and very competitive and we knew we would be tested. It's a great way to start the season and hopefully we can build a little momentum as we get on the road."
Bella Amyx got the Seawolves on the board in the opening minutes of the game, when the senior midfielder took a shot through the box which flew past the right of goalkeeper Nicki Rucki who came off her line for the ball.
The quick 1-0 lead set the tempo for the game as Sonoma State controlled the match from there on out.
Riley West then connected with
Molly Murphy, helping the freshman to her first career goal. With a shot from just inside the box on the left side, Murphy rifled the ball far corner beating a diving Rucki to double Sonoma State's margin.
The Seawolves back line limited shots on goal but
Kristen Spear made two saves during the match to notch her second straight shutout.
"Kristen has really been through it all and seen it all," added Salzmann Dunn. "She really provides the right kind of mentality for the moment and has a way of leading that's both demanding and encouraging. She loves being challenged and that helps our training environment stay very competitive. She's been in big games and gives us the stability we need in the back."
After opening conference play with a pair of wins at Seawolf Soccer Field, Sonoma State will take off on a four-game road trip heading to Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State LA next week, before taking on conference-rival UC San Diego at Triton Soccer Stadium on Sept. 28 and Cal State San Marcos two days later.
