CARSON, Calif.— #23 Sonoma State got off a barrage of shots through 110 minutes of play but were unable to sink a game-winner as the Seawolves drew Cal State Dominguez Hills 0-0 from the StubHub! Center Friday night.
"It's amazing," said head coach Emira Salzmann Dunn of playing a match at the home of MLS's LA Galaxy. "The field, the atmosphere, the tunnel, the locker room…it's all incredible and something that these athletes will probably only ever experience once."
With the shutout,
Kristen Spear extended her streak to three-straight games in which the senior goalkeeper has held her opponent scoreless, and keeps her squad undefeated through the first seven games of the season.
Sonoma State proved the primary attacker on goal all night, taking 37 shots, 13 of which went on frame forcing Toros' keeper Ruth-Maria Soto to make saves. Leading the litany of shots was Kristen Lerma and
Riley West who each put three shots on target, taking eight and six overall, respectively.
"Dominating a game and winning it unfortunately are two different things," noted Salzmann Dunn of her team's performance. "When we have those stats, we need to find a way to turn that into a result."
The Seawolves' best opportunity of the match came in the opening minutes of the first overtime when
Miranda Sanchez made a break down the right side of the field as
Bella Amyx laid off a pass to her teammate just outside the box. Sanchez one-timed the ball to the far side, beating the diving Soto, but the shot rolled just wide of the post.
With the draw, SSU moves to 4-0-3 on the season. Sonoma State heads to Cal State LA Sunday to take on the Golden Eagles at 2:00 p.m..
