LOS ANGELES, Calif. – With an 83rd minute shot,
Kamryn Haiber secured Sonoma State's 1-0 victory over Cal State LA, collecting her first goal in a Seawolves uniform, while continuing SSU's undefeated season start. With her fourth-straight shutout, goalkeeper
Kristen Spear continued the Seawolves' streak of 451 minutes without allowing a goal.
"It was a tough game on Friday because even though we dominated, we didn't win so it's almost worse that way," head coach
Emiria Salzmann Dunn said of Sonoma State's double overtime draw with CSU Dominguez Hills two days ago. "And then to come back against Cal State LA—who is so good, so talented and so smart, and have such good players and a history of winning—and for us to be able to emotionally turn the game in our favor, was really big and I'm really proud of that."
The Seawolves' best opportunity in the first half came as a ball was played through to
Sam Layman inside the box, where she deflected it on, into the back of the net. However, mid-celebration the goal was called back, as the line judge determined the ball to be played barely offsides.
With just under five minutes remaining, a scurry inside the box allowed multiple chances for a shot on goal. A chip in near the penalty spot bounced in to an unmarked
Riley West, however the Seawolf defender was unable to get a shot off and the ball ended up at the feet of
Miranda Sanchez. Sanchez took a shot through traffic but it was eventually downed on a diving save by Golden Eagles' keeper Adriana Maldonado.
Sonoma State nearly took the lead in the 63rd minute as Sanchez again opened up a shot on goal. From 30 yards out, the midfielder took a looping strike that nearly fell into the top corner on the near post. Instead the ball pinged off the joint of the crossbar and the upright, and back into the field of play.
The Golden Eagles' best chance of the match game with 23 minutes remaining in the second half as keeper
Kristen Spear came off her line in an attempt to corral the ball, but a strong play from the Sonoma State defense netted a team save in front of the goal after LA's chip shot beat Spear.
Within the final 10 minutes of regulation, Layman and Sanchez found a pair of chances on goal. Layman received a ball down the line, beating her mark toward goal, and with a touch she put a right-footed shot just over the bar before Sanchez did nearly the same on the opposite side of the goal.
With Sonoma State set up for a corner kick in the 83rd minute, Cal State LA brought their entire defensive unit inside the box. On the in-swinging set piece, Golden Eagles' keeper Adriana Maldonado punched the ball out to the top of the penalty arc where it rolled out to an unmarked
Kamryn Haiber. With a touch, the freshman settled the ball before striking it to the far post, where it deflected off of a Golden Eagles' defender and into the back of the net for the game-winner.
"It's a real testament to her spirit and her ability to adapt and to be effective in a high-pressure situation," Salzmann Dunn said of Haiber and her game-winning goal. "She's worked so hard all the time that I'm just so happy she got it because it's that reward for all the work that she's done."
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 5-0-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in CCAA play before heading into a clash with CCAA-rival UC San Diego on Friday and a duel with San Marcos Sunday afternoon.
