SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In a chippy match featuring 28 fouls and five yellow cards, a second-minute penalty kick conversion by #24 Sonoma State proved the difference in the Seawolves' Sunday match with Cal State San Marcos, as the visitors defeated the hosts by a final of 1-0.
A foul inside the box set up the penalty just inside the two-minute mark as
Sarah Lindborg came to the spot to sink the opportunity for the 1-0 lead and her second goal of the season.
Following the Seawolves early lead, the Cougars continued to press on the attack through the rest of the match outshooting Sonoma State 14 to nine.
San Marcos' best chance came with final two minutes of play as a free kick by Madyson Brown was sent on frame from 30 yards out and subsequently saved by
Kristen Spear. Spear went on to make six saves in the match, en route to her fifth shutout in six games.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 6-1-3 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play. Sonoma State returns to action Friday as they host a 3 p.m. match with Cal Poly Pomona at Seawolf Soccer Field.
