On October 11th, under the lights, the Sonoma State Seawolves took on Cal State Dominguez Hills. The tough loss resulted in a goal by the Toros with 2 minutes left in the second period of overtime.
The Seawolves opened strong with dangerous long balls and crosses in the box. Sebastian Santos had a couple of dangerous chances but Dominguez was able to escape the first half with the game tied at 0-0. Dominguez Hills was very physical in the first half as they struggled to keep up with Sonoma and as a result recorded a few Yellow Cards early on.
The second half had some more back and forth action from both teams but a compact defense for Sonoma kept the game 0-0 into the late minutes of the game. The momentum really shifted when Dominguez Hills physical play finally cost them a Red Card and Sonoma was up a man. Moments later the Seawolves were also charged with a Red Card evening out the play.
With both teams down to 10 men, play went into overtime still tied. A late Red Card for Sonoma with 2 minutes left in the second period of overtime gave a free kick to Dominguez and put the Seawolves down to 9 players. On the free kick for Dominguez the ball was whipped in and headed out by Sonoma, but down a man Dominguez had a free player at the top of the box who shot and scored.
Coach Marcus Ziemer after the game stated, "That was a tough loss. We played so well in all facets except the most important one. We created several scoring chances that our guys usually bury, but we didn't put them away and we paid the price with the late goal. Credit to Dominguez Hills, they hung in there and the guy got his chance and hit a bomb."
The Seawolves will look to bounce back on Sunday October 13th against highly ranked Cal State LA.
