Seawolves Suffer Two Losses on Opening Day in Vegas

LAS VEGAS --The Sonoma State softball team suffered a pair of losses on opening day of the 2019 season at the MSUB Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, falling 7-3 to Hawai'i Hilo before coming up short, 6-5, to No. 10 Concordia (Calif.) on Friday afternoon.
 
In the two games combined, Lindsey Calcany Blair, and Cassidy Romano recorded three hits each to lead the Seawolves (0-2) offense.
 
GAME 1: Hawai'I Hilo 7, Sonoma State 3
In the season opener against Hawai'I Hilo, the Seawolves fell behind 3-0 in the top of the second inning. 
A strong defensive third inning held both teams off the base paths. Camille Rodriguez then struck out two Vulcans for allowing a two-run homer. Three walks and a sacrifice fly put the Seawolves on the board 5-2.
 
After a scoreless fifth, the Vulcans knocked the first pitch of the sixth out of the park. Answered by the Seawolves when freshman Cassidy Romano hit her first collegiate home run for a 6-3 score entering the final inning.
 
Hawaii Hilo added a run to the board in the seventh and held the Seawolves to none for a final score of 7-3.
 
GAME 2: No. 10 Concordia (Calif.) 6, Sonoma State 5
Following a scoreless first half, the Eagles jumped ahead 3-0, taking advantage of a Seawolf error and knocking three hits. 
 
Both teams fell silent in the second and third. 
 
Sonoma States three-run, fourth inning was sparked by Senior Lindsey Calcany Blair, to tie the No. 10 team in the nation 3-3. The Eagles capitalized on a Seawolf error, and a sacrifice fly out to regain its lead 4-3. 
 
Jordyn Martinez and Courtney Jack credited an RBI apiece to score both Jordann White and Calcany Blair for a 5-4 lead. A timely double by the Eagles scored two, the last two to cross the plate for a game two final score of 6-5.
 
Despite being credited the loss, Brielle Vidmar held the Eagles to one hit and two strikeouts in her 2.2 innings pitched. 
 
What's Next: Sonoma State will play two games on Saturday, taking on Concordia (Ore.) at 2:00 pm before playing Colorado Christian at 7:00 pm. The Seawolves will wrap up the Desert Stinger on Sunday when they go to battle with Hawaii Pacific at 2:00 pm.
