Turlock, Calif. – Jordann White went 3 for 6 with a double, a home run and six RBI and three others recorded at least three hits as the Sonoma State softball team went 2-0 on the first day of the Tournament of Champions Friday at Pedretti Sports Complex in Turlock.
The Seawolves improve to 18-9 on the year and will return to action on Saturday with two more games – Simon Fraser at 2:00 pm followed by a 4:30 pm matchup with Saint Martin's.
Sonoma State 8, Western Oregon 4
Four in the first and four in the sixth, holding a consistent lead over the Wolves gave the Seawolves its 8-4 edge over Western Oregon.
Sonoma States offense was led by
Alee Balanon (2-for-4; 1 RBI),
Cassidy Romano (2-for-3; 1 RBI), and
Lindsey Calcany Blair (2-for-3; 2 RBI).
Senior
Brielle Vidmar threw her tenth win of the season.
The Seawolves took advantage of a pair of Wolf errors and four hits to gain a 4-0 lead in the first. Starting with a successful double steal to score Balanon, the Seawolves scored their second run off a muffed throw by the catcher (2-0). Two singles by Romano and Calcany Blair solidified Sonoma States strong first inning (4-0).
Western Oregon added three runs over the course of two innings (4-3).
After holding the lead over the Wolves, the Seawolves added four more runs in the sixth. With two RBI singles by Calcany Blair and
Courtney Jack to double its lead (6-3). An error by Western Oregon and a double to left center by Balanon helped the Seawolves added another pair of runs before the sixth came to an end (8-3).
The Wolves added one the in the top of the ninth for a final score of 8-4.
Sonoma State 18, Chaminade 7 (five innings)
18 runs in four innings of play helped the Seawolves to a 18-7 mercy over PacWest opponent Chaminade.
The Silverswords came out swinging in the first gaining a 5-0 lead over the Seawolves.
Sonoma State answered back with five of their own in the bottom of the first. Three hits sparked Sonoma States offensive spurt, a leadoff single by Balanon, single by
Julie Davis and. Abase clearing home run over left field by White cut the Silverswords lead to 5-3. Romano singled to left, and
Bella Chadwell reached on a muffed throw by the first baseman to set the stage for
Briana Avalos. Avalos brought in both Romano and Chadwell with a triple to center field to tie the game 5-5.
The Seawolves kept Chaminade from scoring in the second, third and fourth, will continuing its scoring efforts.
Balanon led off the second with a triple to right center, and White brought her home with a fielder's choice RBI. Two more fielders' choices went in the Seawolves favor along with a pair of RBIs that doubled Sonoma States lead 10-5.
Calcany Blairs 20th hit of the season, a bases-clearing double the left field added three more runs to the board 13-5 and Avalos singled to right field to bring in Calcany Blair (14-5).
In the fourth White doubled to right center to score Davis and Balanon (16-5), Romano and Calcany Blair both scored off an error by the left fielder (18-5).
The Wolves last efforts to salvage its nearing run rule fell short 18-7.
