Women's Basketball Holds Off San Marcos

The Seawolves Remain 1 Game Back Of First Place With Showdown Against UCSD Saturday

Rohnert Park, CA - Thursday night the women's basketball team began a weekend set of games against the two top teams in the CCAA. Just a game back of the top spot in the conference standings, the Seawolves needed a win against the Cougars of CSU San Marcos to remain near the top of the standings. Sonoma defeated San Marcos once before earlier in the season and were looking to seal the season series with a win at home.

Sonoma lead early out of the gate jumping out to a 13-7 lead after the first quarter, but struggled to shoot the ball in the second only hitting three shots the whole quarter and going 0-5 from 3-point range. With tenacious defense lead by #23 Ra'Shanae Johnson, the Seawolves held the Cougars to just 7 points to start the second half. Sonoma also caught fire in the third shooting 72% from the field with Ugochi Anudokem and Kylie Kiech leading the way. The duo would combine for 35 of the Seawolves 54 points for the game and helped stretch the lead to 16 points in the fourth.

San Marcos would make a huge run in the fourth scoring 27 points on 11-20 shooting. However, it was too little too late for the Cougars as they could not overcome the deficit and the free throw line was their enemy as they forced Sonoma to the line where they made 11-15 shots from the stripe to help seal the game late. The Seawolves would finish out the game 54-50 over San Marcos.

Coach Rich Shayewitz and his group now improve to 13-5 on the season and 9-4 in conference play. This win puts them in a three way tie for second place in the CCAA and they will have a chance Saturday afternoon at home against top seed UCSD to close the margin even more seeking a top spot in the CCAA.
