Seawolves Drop Game Late To Tritons

Sonoma remains in top 4 in the CCAA

Rohnert Park, CA - The women's basketball team of Sonoma State played their second game of the weekend home stand against top seed UCSD looking to inch closer to the first spot in the CCAA. Sonoma held off the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos on Thursday night to create a three way tie for second.

The Seawolves came out playing gritty defense and getting timely buckets to create an early lead. The Tritons would climb back into the game towards the end of the half but Sonoma came up clutch with a couple defensive stops to lead by 1 after the first half. The Seawolves held the Tritons to just 3-13 shooting in the first quarter and allowed only one three ball. Strong defense has been a staple for coach Rich Shayewitz and his group all season long and they were showing that in the first half.

Heading into the third, the Seawolves hit a wall at the 28 point mark and the Tritons hit a run nailing three 3 balls and shot 41% from the field in the third. Sonoma would claw back into the game and bring it back to within 4 late in the fourth. However, UCSD was clutch from the free throw line hitting 9-12 for the game and that helped stretch the game away from Sonoma again. Leading scorers for the Seawolves included Sophie Northern and Kylie Kiech as well notching 8 boards in the game.

The Seawolves would fall late 54-47 to the Tritons but still remain in a great position in the CCAA standings. The Seawolves have a favorable schedule to finish the season and postseason basketball is certainly in their sights. They travel to San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona for a difficult road trip as they look to continue their winning form and stay atop the CCAA standings
