Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Seawolves Lose Tough Battle Against Cougars

Rohnert Park, CA - On Thursday night, January 23rd, the Seawolves took the floor for the second game of a double header after the women pulled off a huge win against San Marcos to come within one game of first place in the CCAA. The men are looking to finish the season strong with some quality games at home against San Marcos and conference leaders UC Sand Diego.

The Seawolves took a while to get going in the first half as they came up scoreless in the first 3 possessions and did not record their first bucket until the 16th minute. However, they were able to keep the game close and got their big man play going with center Eric Nielsen. Nielsen would finish with 9 points in the game on 4-9 shooting. The inside scoring was huge for coach J.J. Santa Cruz and his group as they only shot 1-7 from the 3-point line the first half. Sonoma was within 10 at the end of the half and were well in the game.

In the second half, turnovers were Sonoma's greatest downfall as they committed 18 for the game allowing the Cougars to score an equivalent 18 points off those turnovers. Leading scorer Isaac Davidson was able to get going in the second and hit some big shots to keep them in the game including a successful 3-point play mid way through the second. He would finish with 14 for the game and the lead the team in scoring. Sonoma was never able to get over the hump and struggled to keep the game within single digits. San Marcos was 13-27 from the free throw line for the game and despite the poor percentage, they were able to knock them down late in the game to keep the Seawolves out of reach. Sonoma would drop the first game of the weekend home stand 59-46.

The Seawolves played a tough gritty game but could not get the shots to fall early. looking to bounce back, they will face off against the Tritons of UC San Diego seeking an upset of the CCAA top seed. Despite injuries to starters Nick Klarman and Kenny Olsem, the Seawolves are determined to put up a fight against the Tritons at home. Stream the game live on the CCAA network link below.
