Rohnert Park, CA - The Seawolves headed into Saturday night's contest 11-7 in the CCAA looking to secure a spot in the CCAA postseason tournament with the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State close on their heels at 10-9 in conference play. The game was back and forth all night and had a terrific playoff atmosphere with officials review and replays scattering the final seconds to help decide the game. With 10 lead changes, the game remained closely contested until the last possession
The Seawolves came out on top in the first half 38-36 shooting 46% from the field in the first half and a whopping 53% in the second quarter alone. Senior Kylie Kiech once again led her team in scoring in the first half with 15 points. Sonoma's bench play was also huge in the first half as they outscored the Jacks 13-0 after 2 quarters of play. However, star forward for the Jacks, #20 Alexia Thrower willed her team back into the game with 20 points on 9-16 shooting in the first half alone. She was the only Humboldt State player in double figures after a half of play.
Sonoma saw their largest lead grow to 11 in the first quarter but the Jacks would climb back into this one and hang around as they nearly matched the Seawolves in scoring after the third and were well in the game. The Seawolves did shoot a game low 37% from the field in the third which allowed Humboldt to stay close. Alexia Thrower had a monster 4th quarter and would finish with a game high 36 points and 7 boards. Ugochi Anudokem would also have a big second half for the Seawolves as she got to work in the pain and scored 10 of her 16 in the second half. She would also collect 15 rebounds on the night.
It would come down to the final few possessions. The Seawolves lead 74-73 and looked to have had the game won. After failing to convert on their last possession, the Jacks had under 10 to go down the court and get a shot up. With no timeouts left, Humboldt got the defensive rebound and went down the floor. They missed the initial layup attempt and time had appeared to run out but as the buzzer sound the Jacks got a tip-in on the offensive rebound and the ball fell through the net with zeros on the clock. The game would be left up to the officials as they went to the Seawolves instant replay to see if the ball left her hand in time. After minutes of review, the officials declared the Humboldt state player got the shot off in time and the basket counted.
The referees were able to go back and put .4 seconds back on the clock, enough time for the Seawolves to run a play. Unable to convert with such a small window, the Jacks would come away with the last second win on a near buzzer beater tip-in.
Heartbroken but not yet out, the Seawolves will head to Chico for another competitive matchup on the road where the Wildcats are just behind the Seawolves in the 6th spot in the CCAA at 10-8. The Seawolves still have control of their destiny and will look to inch closer to a playoff spot in the CCAA tournament next Saturday before they return home for senior weekend against Cal State LA and Dominguez Hills.
