Rohnert Park, CA - The Seawolves women's basketball team traveled to Chico state on their senior night in a heated CCAA matchup with playoff implications. For the last few weeks of conference play the Seawolves have had control of their destiny but they dropped an absolute heartbreaker last weekend at home to Humboldt state on a near buzzer beater making the closing weeks that much more valuable.
Coach
Rich Shayewitz and his group came out tough leading the game by 3 at the half. Sonoma shot 70% from the field after the first quarter making 7 of their 10 field goals and also drilling 3 big treys to come out with the lead early.
Kim Savio was a big threat with the three ball as she finished the game shooting 3-4 from downtown. Despite leading by 3 at the half, the Seawolves would hit a cold streak in the second quarter and into the third. They shot just 2-11 from the field in that third quarter where the game seemed to get away from them momentarily and were just 2-6 from 3-point range.
Once again turnovers were the Seawolves worst nightmare as they committed a season high 27 turnovers in the game Saturday night that allowed chico to take control of the game. The Wildcats scored 22 points off of turnovers in the contest. The Seawolves, however, would climb back into the game like they are accustomed to doing. They would score 21 points in the final quarter to give them a shot at the game but allowed a game high 24 points to the Wildcats to seal the game. The Seawolves would finish the game with 3 starters in double figures.
Ugochi Anudokem would finish with yet another double double recording 14 points and 15 boards.
Sophie Northern and
Kylie Kiech would also finish with 14 in the game.
The Seawolves return home for the final week of CCAA play facing off against Cal state LA on Thursday night and then Dominguez Hills for the men's and women's senior night at 1/3 PM. SSU currently sits in 7th place in the conference standings behind Stanislaus State but still have a chance to get in to the postseason tournament. Spots 4 thru 7 are separated by just one game and so a weekend sweep could help solidify a spot for the Seawolves.
