Rohnert Park, CA - After coming off of a weekend split on the road against nationally ranked UC San Diego, the Seawolves were optimistic and confident as they returned back to SSU for their home opener against another conference favorite in San Francisco State. Coach Jennifer Bridges and her group were able to make some major adjustments after giving up three 10-run games in the Desert Stinger tournament where they went 1-4 as they took 2 of 4 against the Tritons including two come from behind wins.
In game 1 of the 4-game set senior transfer Nalani Scates got the start against the Gators and threw 7 strong innings giving up 2 runs on 8 hits. The Seawolves trailed the majority of the game and were unable to get on the board until the bottom half of the 7th. The Seawolves pulled off yet another late game, come from behind win as they were able to score 3 in the 7th to walk it off and secure the first game of the series. Freshman Skylar Linnane kicked things off with a pinch hit solo shot to left field to make it 2-1. The SF State pitcher remained in the game and loaded up the bases to bring up catcher Jordyn Martinez. With the game on the line Martinez smashed a double to right center to score two runs and walk it off for the Seawolves! After a couple solid outings for Sonoma, Scates was able to get her first win as a Seawolf and coach Bridges and her group won again in dramatic fashion.
Game 2 saw senior Teresa Danenberg take the circle looking to conclude the day with back-to-back wins. Danenberg gave up 1 run on 3 hits in another complete game performance for the Seawolves. Sonoma was able to score early in the second on an RBI triple from freshman Reagan Hunt. After the Gators tied the game in the 4th, shortstop Cassidy Romano would hit a solo shot in the bottom half to respond and re-take the lead 2-1. She would add to the score with a sacrifice fly in the 6th to make it 3-1 Sonoma. Romano would finish with 2 RBI's on the day. The Seawolves would take game 2, 3-1 and head into the final day with loads of confidence looking for a series sweep.
Unfortunately, Sonoma would drop games 3 and 4 and end the weekend in a 2-2 split with the Gators. They lost in an exciting 9-inning contest where the Seawolves saw themselves down 7-0 in the game. A 4-run 7th pulled them back into the game where they had chances to even win it in extras but just could not execute. They would drop the 3 and a half hour affair 9-8. Another strong pitching performance from Nalani Scates in game 4 would not be enough as the Seawolves fell 2-1 in the series finale. They enter this week on a buy and will look to rest up before their non-conference matchup with Academy of Art next Tuesday at the Seawolf Softball Diamond.
