VB: Seawolves Topple Humboldt State for Second Time this Week

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State put on an attacking display on Saturday evening, hitting a season best .405 on their way to a 3-0 sweep of Humboldt State.  The Seawolves defeated the Jacks for the second time this week and improved their CCAA record to 7-3.

SSU did not waste any time, leading the first set wire-to-wire and never trailing.  The Seawolves took an early 10-5 lead and continued to extend it throughout the set, leading 21-14 and 24-15 before winning game point.  They would rack up 12 kills in the opening set while hitting .409 and tacking on three aces.

Sonoma State took an early lead in the second set as well, jumping out to a 7-3 advantage thanks to three aces.  The Seawolves would lead until the halfway point when the Jacks used a six-point run to take their first lead of the match at 15-13.  The lead did not last long with SSU answering with a 6-1 spurt to retake the set and never look back.

The sweep was completed with a dominating 25-11 win in the third set.  The Seawolves attack was unstoppable in the third, recording 15 kills and just one error while hitting .583.  After opening the set with a 7-4 lead SSU essentially put the match away with a 14-3 run.  Sonoma State notched nine kills during the run, including two from Kiana Richardson, Amy Trephan and Emily Eaton.  Richardson later ended the match with back-to-back kills.

The Seawolves held a 41-20 kill advantage, their largest of the season while hitting over .400 for the first time.  Eaton and Richardson registered 11 kills each with Eaton hitting a career best .556.  Jenn Trephan added 23 assists, four aces and three blocks.

Sonoma State remains at home next week with matches against the two top teams in the conference, Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
