VB: Seawolves Fall in Five to Cal Poly Pomona Despite Season High 65 Kills

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Sonoma State volleyball team dropped the final two sets in a tough five-set loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon.  The Seawolves moved to 7-4 in CCAA play despite recording a season high 65 kills in the match.

SSU started the match strong, leading to wire-to-wire in the first set and holding a 15-9 kill advantage.  The Seawolves won the first four points of the match and later used spurts of four and six unanswered to run to a 25-16 win.

The second set was closer throughout with each team gaining the upper hand.  The Broncos used a six point run with Sonoma leading 11-10 to take a lead but the Seawolves would not go away.  With Cal Poly Pomona leading 18-14 the two teams took turns recording three-point runs.  First SSU scored three straight to make it 18-17 only to be followed by the visitors extending their margin back to 21-17.  Sonoma answered right back to make it 21-20 but another Bronco run gave them set-point at 24-20.  The Seawolves were not done yet, scoring the next three on a kills by Jenn Trephan and Emily Eaton before CPP put the set away with the next point.

Sonoma State came out firing in the third set, another highly contested battle that saw the Seawolves set a season high with 21 kills in the game.  The SSU attack came from everywhere with Eaton leading the way with seven kills.  Kiana Richardson added six while Amy Tephan tacked on four and Jenn Trephan two.  The set turned with the Broncos leading 16-13 as Sonoma State ripped off a 10-2 run to take control.  The Seawolves used eight straight kills during the run on their way to a 25-20 win.

The forth set looked to be another back-and-forth affair with the teams trading leads most of the way.  However, with the score knotted at 17-17, Cal Poly Pomona went on an 8-1 run to put the set away and force a fifth and deciding set.

In the final set, it was nearly an exact replay of the fourth with the teams trading blows early.  With the score tied the Broncos broke it wide open with an 8-2 run this time and cruised to a 15-9 victory.

The Seawolves racked up a season best 65 kills for the game while also adding nine aces.  Eaton led all players with 22 kills while Richardson and Amy Trephan also reached double figures with 17 and 13 respectively.  Jenn Trephan filled up the stat sheet with 35 assists, 15 digs, six kills, four blocks and a pair of aces.

Sonoma State is on the road next week with matches against San Francisco State on Friday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
