SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 13 ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team dropped a tough on Sunday afternoon, falling to Cal State Monterey 2-1 in overtime. The Seawolves moved to 5-1 in CCAA play with the loss and now stand at 10-2 on the season.
SSU found themselves down early with a goal in the 12
th minute by the Otters. Cal State Monterey Bay played a ball into the box Sierra Levy hit towards the goal. The shot deflected off a Sonoma State defender and rolled into the back of the next. This marked just the second time all season the Seawolves found themselves trailing in a game.
The one goal advantage would last until the 32
nd minute when the Seawolves' two center backs combined for the goal.
Julia Pritchard lined up a free kick from about 30 yards out and rocketed a shot off the crossbar. Krissy Keller ran onto the rebound and knocked it home to tie the score at 1-1.
Sonoma State continued their offensive pressure in the second half, controlling the ball for most of the period. The Seawolves had a couple chances near the goal but both attempts were stopped by Otter goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy.
After the scoreless 45 minutes the game moved to overtime where the Otters struck just over three minutes into the period. CSUMB earned a corner kick and sent the cross into the box where it was headed away by the Seawolves. The Otters corralled the clear and Brenda Uribe ended up with the ball outside of the box. She took a couple touched and send a low shot to the far post and into the side of the net for the game winner.
This was just the third game of the season where the opponent managed to get a goal on the Seawolves and the first time in six conference contests. Sonoma held a 12-10 shot advantage for the game, including 6-5 in shots on goal.
The Seawolves hit the road next week for a pair of matches, taking on Humboldt State on Friday and Chico State on Sunday.
