CHICO, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's soccer team suffered a setback on Monday morning, falling to Chico State 1-0 in a tough road contest. The Seawolves dropped to 6-2 in CCAA play but still sit at the top of the table in the CCAA standings.
SSU controlled the game from the start, keeping the ball in their offensive half for most of the game. The Seawolves continuously put pressure on the Wildcats defense, racking up five shots in the first half but could not break the plain.
Phoebe Barnes was tested twice in goal for Sonoma and stopped both shots.
The second half continued the same way with the Seawolves constantly putting pressure on the backline. Sonoma put several cross into the box but just could not connect. In the 79
th minute the Wildcats caught the Seawolves on a counter attack and got the ball into the box. After a blocked shot, Susanna Garcia knocked a shot from eight yards out into the back of the net.
The Seawolves put together two great chances in the final ten minutes but a shot by
Malia Falk was saved and another by Falk missed just wide.
Sonoma State held a 14-8 shot advantage for the game with Barnes making five saves in net. Emma Hofmann stopped seven attempts in net for Chico State.
SSU currently sits at top of the CCAA table with 18 points, one point ahead of Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State. The Seawolves host Stanislaus State and CSUEB this week in a couple of crucial CCAA contests.
